Guess My Lesbian Friend Does Not Like Me Anymore

It just goes to show the real nature of certain people....or groups of people. I have (maybe "had" is a better word) a lesbian friend who was married in California when the law was changed before Proposition 8 and who had twins with her partner. She called me a few days before November 4, 2008 and visited on the phone. After a few minutes she asked if I was certainly going to vote 'NO' on Prop 8. I told her I was going to vote 'YES.' She became very upset. Stated she thought I was a friend. She stated something to the effect that all this time I must have been just covering my dislike for gay people. And offered to me a few other titles which were not pleasant. She asked my reasoning. I told her I have blogged it. The next day the blog had many more very aggressive and unkind statements from this friend (which you can read as Comment). She also wrote me an email with disparaging comments about myself and how she had misjudged me and had thought I was a nice person, and contending that I just harbored dislike for gay people. None of that is true...but I did not argue with her...you cannot reason with someone who has their mind made up.

I have thought about all that interaction with my friend. I am unavoidably able to come to only one conclusion: It reminded me of being a member of the Nazi Party during the time of Hitler or of being in the Soviet Union at the time of Stalin. As long as you thought and did what they wanted, you were OK. But as soon as you crossed them or their party ideals, you were punished....sent to the Russian front or to Siberia or....???

As long as I behaved in a manner my friend liked, I was OK. But as soon as I crossed her...voted my conscious...I was punished. True, my punishment was not as bad as being sent to Siberia...I guess I just lost a friend. And WHY? Because I voted my conscious! I thought this is a free country and people are respected to vote how they believe they should....without reprisal. I guess my friend does not view it that way. Her attitude seemed to be: Her way or the hiway...Her way or punishment...small as it may have been. I wonder if all gay people are of the same attitude. I do not disrespect a gay person for voting 'NO' on Prop 8. I respect their right to vote as they wish. Some of my own children voted in a manner different from me in the presidential election. Does that mean they should be punished? Ousted? Mistreated? Get real!

The gays complain that they are being denied their civil liberties....their rights. In a way, my friend tried to deny me my civil liberty....my right to vote as I wished. GO FIGURE! TO ME IT IS A DOUBLE STANDARD!!! THEY WANT WHAT THEY WANT AND TO HELL WITH ME OR THE REST OF US! THEY (or at least my friend) HAVE RIGHTS, AND THE REST OF US DO NOT...UNLESS WE AGREE WITH THEM.
