Have those of you who like to serve God ever thought about brain functioning as an important issue in your service?
Brain health is becoming a topic discussed more and more these days. The general research on sleep relative to brain health suggests that most adults need eight (8) hours of sleep a night, teenagers nine (9), and children ten (10) hours. Hogwash you say.... We all know people who survive on five or six hours a night and seem to do just fine! Well, Friar Tuck!!!! Let me tell you about your five hours.....
True...some people seem to get along on five or six hours sleep without damage. But for most of us this is not true. For most of us, when we sleep less than needed, we are 'stealing' from our self. We are stealing healthy brain functioning, memory capacity, longevity of life. Of course, when a person is younger, there is usually plenty of extra so that the theft is not readily apparent. But as you become older, the theft (though still likely not thought of as an issue) becomes a factor in your capacity for church service. AND...your ability to do anything else in your life.
Sleep less now and cut short the time you have to serve; OR sleep adequately now and lengthen the time you have to serve. It is your choice.
And, by the way, you with teenagers who like to sleep in on the week end. Probably you should let them do it. They probably need to catch up on their sleep from what a teenager tends to miss during the week.
